Well, what a year 2020 has been!

Christmas normally provides a natural ‘half time’ break in the season and allows us time to reflect, plan and compare to previous years. Well, not this year as the last competitive game was held back in March - COVID-19 is the real GRINCH that not only stole Rugby but now Christmas!

The challenges of 2020 were not expected and have had a serious impact on our communities and lives. I hope that we have now seen the worst of this crisis and can start to reach a state of normality during 2021. Our thoughts are with all the Hampshire rugby community club members and their families who have experienced first-hand the hardships of this year, be that ill-health or reduced income.

Through these unsettled times, grassroots rugby, has remained strong and at the very heart of our communities. You have all appreciated that the situation has been out of our hands and you have all been very patient to see how the situation has developed, we have strived to communicate in all manner of ways any snippet of information out to you. We would like to thank you for your patience and support.

The impact of the pandemic on mental health and wellbeing cannot be underestimated, so it has been great for all players to be able to go to their clubs to let off steam and enjoy some outdoor fun and fitness with their friends and team mates.

We have at all times needed to ensure that we can return to rugby in a way that is not only compliant with Government and RFU advice, but safe for all players, volunteers and their families. You all appreciate that the situation is out of our hands and you have all been very understanding waiting to see how the situation developed, supporting your club at each stage of the Return to Rugby Roadmap.

We should still look ahead to 2021 with hope and excitement, try and move positively into the New Year, let us continue to work as a team and continue to support each other. The prospect of returning to some local contact matches looks possible in the middle of January 2021 – apart from a few Tier 4 areas. –however, as we know this could change at a moments notice.

Finally, to all of you; players, supporters, physios, caterers, bar staff, referees, facilities and ground managers, committees, mums, dads, fundraisers, sponsors and all those other staff and volunteers that makes Hampshire rugby so successful, I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season and I look forward to returning to some sort of normality in 2021. THANK YOU😊

Merry Christmas and Keep Safe!
