The Hurricanes Special Needs Rugby team is the first of its kind in the South of England. Affiliated to the Junior Section of Eastleigh RFC, the team was set up in September 2008 for children and young adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. The team trains and competes in touch rugby with training taking place every Sunday. Members can enjoy playing sport in a fun environment, where they can work as part of a team and improve their physical fitness.

All volunteers for the Hurricanes work full time in Special Needs Education and are well aware of the limited opportunities for young people/adults with learning difficulties to be involved in rugby outside of schools. ‘Hampshire Special Needs Rugby Program’ has been running in Hampshire since 2003and while this program has generated a real interest in rugby within special educational needs schools/establishments, there is no ‘exit route’ into a club for young people/adults with learning difficulties.

The Hurricanes are looking to provide this ‘exit route’. This rugby club will be a welcome addition to local facilities for young people/adults with learning difficulties. The philosophy of the Hurricanes is the enjoyment factor, as well as getting fit, having fun and exercising. It is also an opportunity for members to try and build up self-confidence and self-esteem, while giving them a chance to learn some social skills.
