Hampshire U16 v Surrey U16

Guildford RFC 7th January 2018

Due to losing the pitches at Basingstoke RFC the County and “A” games were switched to Guildford RFC at short notice. We are very grateful to the Hampshire Refs for agreeing to travel to officiate.

Both games were very tight but for different reasons.

The tone was set in the County game straight from the kick off. Surrey drove up field through several phases followed by a strong run from the winger who scored in the corner.  This was followed 5 minutes later with Hampshire’s winger doing the same.

The game continued in this fashion, very competitive and hard fought but both sides struggling to cope with players that broke through the first up tackles.  With 9 tries in the first half Surrey had the advantage 31 – 26 at the break.

The second half was a little bit tighter but still resulted in 5 tries. Players on both sides demonstrated good running lines and excellent finishing skills.

Final score 43-45 to Surrey

Tries: Josh Wise 2, Will Double, Alex Young, Ethan Pawadyira, Murray Dare and Ash Chirima.

Conversions: Josh Wise 3 and Joe Knowles

The “A” game was the opposite of the County game with both teams’ defences being strong. A very hard fought game with neither team giving much away. With limited chances for both sides it was 0 – 0 at half time.  The second half followed the same pattern as the first until towards the end Hampshire finally broke the deadlock with a strong backs move resulting in a try.

Final score  7-0 to Hampshire

Tries: Finley Brown

Conversions: Ben Kay
