Stafford Lind

It is with great sadness that the Romsey RFC has to announce the passing of former 1st team scrum half Stafford Lind at the age of 59.

Stafford joined the club in the 80’s from Portsmouth RFC and formed a deadly half back partnership with Dave Walker playing well over 100 times for the 1st team.

A skilful player with an accurate pass and sly dummy, Stafford’s party trick, when the referee was on the opposite side of the scrum or looking away, was to bend down and then whip the ball out to the fly half without bothering to put the ball in at all.

He was a great servant to the Royal Toby’s cricket side, the cricketing arm of the rugby club, where he was a nagging seamer and useful batsman and also represented the club in the national rugby club golf championships.

When he had finished playing he offered sage advice to the younger players often highlighted with instructions with his pipe and was always welcoming to new members of the club.

A true gentleman he will be greatly missed by the whole of the club and our thoughts are with his family.

A service of Thanksgiving is this Thursday 3rd December at 1300 at Romsey Abbey, club ties to be worn.
