HAMPSHIRE RFU COLTS LEAGUE REPORT (12 February 2017)
by Richard V Isaacs

Alton Colts took a huge step towards securing the Hampshire RFU Colts League title after edging out Trojans in a nail-biting match which has opened up an 11-point gap at the summit of the table.

It could have been so very different though had Trojans hit the last gasp penalty with the final kick of the game but it was Alton who extended their unbeaten winning run to seven games with the 10-9 triumph under the lights on Stoneham Lane.

Three Tom Knight Owen penalties gave Trojans a 9-0 interval lead but the competitions' leading point scorer Cameron Hamer brought the Red and Blacks back into the game with a well worked try which he also converted and later added a penalty to give the visitors the all important lead which they just about managed to cling onto, courtesy of the crucial missed penalty.

And it got no better for Trojans three days later as just one conversion was the difference between the two sides as Winchester A got the better of their hosts 19-17.

Once again, Trojans opened up a 12-0 half-time lead when Tom Nixon and Wes Chiromo both crossed for tries, which Knight Owen added the extras to one of them.

However, back came Winchester and Wilf Nicholson, Jesse Ribeiro and Ben Donnell all went over in response to Dan White's second half score but the difference was James Pike's boot, as he slotted two conversions to ensure Winchester are still in the title shake up with three games remaining.

The Division Two title race is now down to two teams with Tadley Tigers sitting pretty at the top following their 26-8 victory over previously unbeaten New Milton, which has given them an eight point lead at the top.

Only Andover can topple them from the top now after the North Hampshire men secured a bonus point success to snuff out the challenge of the Foresters.

Tadley's Aaron O'Sullivan opened the scoring and added a penalty before Sami Hattab scored for the visitors but the home side eased away through a brace from Tom Nash and a try through Ben Wickens while O'Sullivan and Harry Willis-Finn exchanged penalties.

Anything could happen in Division 3 as just five points separate top from bottom after Alton B secured a 12-5 victory at Basingstoke B.

Lewis Williamson and Sam Appleby Scriven exchanged tries in the first half before Conrad Janjawa eased Alton clear with Kieran Becker Davies adding the extras.
