HAMPSHIRE RFU COLTS LEAGUE REPORT - Week 5
by Richard V Isaacs

New Milton and District have moved menacingly into second place of the Hampshire RFU Colts League Division 2 with a crushing nine-try victory over previously unbeaten Petersfield when week five of the competition took place last Sunday.

The Foresters were in invincible mood as they breezed to a bonus point in the first half and then proceeded to collected another five tries in the second period to end the East Hampshire's mens good start to the campaign.

Tom Wood was the headline act for New Milton, crossing twice and he was joined on the scoring chart by Alfie Wignall, Sid Anders and Sami Hattab in the first period and then Pat Busby, George Rawlings, Christian Brown and Charlie Jewiss after the break with Henry Collings posting five conversions in the rout.

Only Hugo Truman could grab a second half consolation for 'Field which Aaron Keast improved with a conversion but they slip to third place on points difference while New Milton climb to within four points of unbeaten Andover, who have played a game more.

Tadley Tigers have jumped up into fourth place with a comfortable 26-6 home victory over Ellingham and Ringwood, helping themselves to a bonus point along the way.

Henry Fletcher and William Hutchins got the home side on their way with first half scores before Reece Coker - who also hit three conversions - and Owain Bonoghue added scores in the second.  The visitors could only look to Will Jenkins' two penalties for their points on the long haul to the north of the county.

It was a very tight affair at Rugby Camp in Portsmouth where Farnborough came from behind to secure a narrow 18-16 victory to move into fifth place with their first win.

The hosts eased into a 16-8 interval lead thanks to Samuel Olie and Ted Harding's tries which were joined by Joe Thompson's two successful penalties while Ian Wells went over for 'Borough alongside a Tom Perkin penalty.

But scored from Callum Maskrey and Alex Hankins was enough to give the North Hampshire side the crucial victory, leaving Portsmouth without a win from their first three games.

All the sides in Division 3 have now played one game and Basingstoke B joined Winchester B and Vectis on five points at the top of the table after a 24-19 success over Eastleigh.

Eastleigh got off to the best possible start with a penalty try opening the scoring but hooker Taylor Stranney drove over from close range to cut the arrears before full-back Alfie Rowley powered to the line following Drew Paterson's impressive line-break and Ollie Rampton added a third with a fine kick and chase.

But the visitors were not to be intimated and hit back with a score just before the interval, hauling the score to 19-12 at the break.

Basingstoke stretched that advantage with their fourth and bonus point try when Paterson took advantage of Ed Pearson's 30-yard run to score and maintain a lead they held onto despite the visitors grabbing a third try and claiming a losing point.
