HAMPSHIRE RFU COLTS LEAGUE REPORT - Week 4
by Richard V Isaacs

Played 3, Won 3.  It has been the perfect start for Alton as they continued their sensational start to the season in the Hampshire RFU Colts League Division 1 with a bonus point 36-18 victory over fellow promotees Tottonians on Sunday.

Having already banked victories over Havant and Winchester, winless Totts were next on their hit list and three tries in both halves was enough to maintain their 100% record, grabbing their third bonus point along the way.

Harry Cann, Oliver Fielder and Cameron Hamer all crossed for the Red and Blacks in the opening half with Hamer slotting a conversation while the home side could only respond with two George Hixon penalties.

They did pull a couple of tries back courtesy of Alex Jones and Charlie Forsyth but it was very much in consolation as Cann posted a second and was joined by Conrad Janjawa and Joe West on the scoresheet to complete the five-point victory, pushing them four points clear at the top of the table.

And they are four points clear of Basingstoke, who produced the result of the day by defeating Trojans 21-19 in a nail-biting encounter at Stoneham Lane.

All that separated the sides was one conversion although the hosts had a late chance to snatch victory away but the penalty shot from the touchline was narrowly missed and it was 'Stoke who took the spoils.

Trojans opened the scoring after just one minute when centre Wesley Chiromo powered through but the visitors struck back after a string of scrums allowed full-back Leon Williams to go over in the corner for an impressive team try which Joe Campbell improved.

However, Chiromo grabbed a second before the interval and replacement Josh Roberts stretched the lead further with a score just after the break to open up an imposing 19-7 lead.

Back came Basingstoke though and with some indiscipline costing Trojans a couple of players to yellow cards, Alex Camm crashed over from close range and Campbell added the extras before second-row Jon Page stole a line-out and piled over to bring the scores level - and Campbell hit the all important extra two.

It wasn't over there as Trojans came hard and a series of drives gave them a penalty on the left but the kick went wide and the visitors claimed a very impressive scalp.

Winchester A grabbed their first win of the season with a hard-fought 29-15 win over Havant, who stay in third place a point ahead of Trojans and their opponents.

George Brown and Nick White both grabbed a brace of tries as the Black and Amber's eased into bonus point territory while Will Paget collected their fifth of the afternoon - Dan Read converting twice to bring home the full five points.

Andover moved four points clear at the top of Division 2 with a bonus-point victory over Gosport and Fareham, who remain without a win from their opening two games.

The home side opened the scoring with a couple of James Wales penalties but Ioan Gwynne Davies responded for the All Blacks with a try and a penalty and Ben Reed capitalised on a well placed kick and chase to score.

Gwynne Davies added a further two tries to complete a hat-trick before Ethan Carpenter pulled one back for the hosts.  However, Jack Potter and Josh Middleton made sure of the victory, which keeps them ahead of Petersfield, who travel to New Milton next weekend.

The fledgling Division 3 table is topped by Winchester B and Vectis, who won a highly entertaining encounter at Fawley 35-26 to pick up the full five point haul.

Both sides were indebted to hat-trick heroes - Tom Randell crossed three times for the Islanders while George O'Brien went over thrice for the Oilmen.

But it was scores from George Lawrence, Richard Pitman, Barney Thomas and Elys Norman that pulled Vectis away in the end - despite none of the seven tries being converted!  Josh Chambers crossed for Fawley in addition to O'Brien and also converted three.
