HAMPSHIRE RFU COLTS LEAGUE REPORT – Weeks 2 and 3
by Richard V Isaacs

Newly promoted Alton A have kicked off their debut season in Division 1 with back-to-back victories, defeating another of the heavily backed sides in week 2 of the HRFU Colts League.

Having already down Winchester A, they took their confidence to reigning holders and National Colts Cup runners-up Havant and pulled off a superb 26-22 victory.

But what was especially pleasing for the Black and Reds was that they were 15-0 down at the interval following tries from Aiden Langton and Jonah North, one of which North converted and added a penalty.

However, a four-try second half burst, through Lewis Jones-Ayres, Oliver Burden, Cameron Hamer and Sam Brench eased the North Hampshire side into the lead and despite Langton adding a second for the hosts, it was Alton’s day.

With two wins from two, they sit astride the table, three points ahead of Basingstoke who dealt with Tottonians’ challenge 30-12 to climb into second place.

Alex Camm’s early try gave the hosts the perfect start before Alfie Rowley added a second while Joe Campbell hit a conversion and two penalties as they opened up an 18-0 lead.

Brad Titcombe furthered their lead before Alex Jones and Finn Goodridge finally made some indents into the game with a couple of tries for Totts.

Any hope of a late revival were squashed though as Matt Mairs ensured the game was sown up for the Down Grangers with their fifth try of the afternoon.

In Division 2, it is neck and neck at the top between Petersfield and Andover, who have kicked off the campaign with dual victories to their name.

Petersfield lead the way, just, on points difference after their 24-17 victory at Farnborough was followed by a high-scoring 57-24 success at home to Fordingbridge.

Nick Wilde’s double, accompanying Angus McIntosh and Aaron Keast’s scores have ‘Field the perfect start against fellow promotees Farnborough and they backed it up with a storming win over the Foresters.

Keast’s hat-trick and Joe Heath’s pair led the way alongside Seb Kay, George Angel, George Dodds and Pat Seaman while Will Mathews hit six conversions along the way.

Andover’s Ben Reed was the headline in their 29-3 win over Portsmouth with two tries and they endured their 100% record remained intact with a fine 20-8 triumph over Tadley Tigers.

Gabe Williams, Ioan Gwynne Davies and Josh Middleton got themselves on the scoresheet for the All Blacks with Jordan Latter’s try and Charlie Lutterloch’s conversion in response.
