HAMPSHIRE RUGBY

PRINCIPAL SPONSORS

On Monday5th September at St Marys leisure centre, Hampshire Rugby and the RFU Area 2 staff came face to face with Solent Sharks with the brutality of Wheelchair Rugby writes Garry Doherty.

“It was very noisy from the very start when two players decided to test themselves by colliding with each other in a massive ‘hit’ we could see that we were in for a treat”.

As the players entered the court, they were joined by plenty of testosterone and so, when RFU staff were introduced to basics of the sport and given the opportunity to test themselves against Wheelchair Rugby players, they did so without realising the challenge they were in for.

Great Britain Wheel Chair Rugby has its own governing body, but that doesn’t mean we can’t work together on projects of mutual benefit.

For the uninitiated, who may think that it’s not real rugby you couldn’t be more wrong. The players feel like rugby players and it’s every bit as exciting as the able bodied game.

Hampshire hope to work with Solent Sharks in future events involving mini youth teams. There are social barriers to break down and why not have some fun while we’re doing it!
