The first match of the inaugural Women's County Championship and Hampshire have been drawn in the South West Plate competition against Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. Unfortunately, Cornwall withdrew from the competition in the week before the opening match making this a 3 way group.

Somerset visit Hampshire following a resounding defeat at the hands of Devon last week and have made a number of changes to their squad in advance of the game at Fordingbridge RFC.

Due to changes within the management of the Hampshire management group and the impact of Trojans advancing to their Championship Play-Off success, the first open trials could not be held until the 22nd of April, giving us less than two weeks to bring a squad together and to formulate a cohesive and competitive team.

It is testament to the commitment of the players and coaches alike that there was a will and desire to get this right from the outset. From an initial group of more than 40 players representing 8 clubs, the match day squad of 22 was selected to represent the county, and a perfect day for rugby was booked and duly delivered.

The game was played in excellent conditions, ideal for running rugby which is what we were able to see from a spirited and growingly confident team, superbly led by Hannah Kemish from Scrum Half to a final result of Hampshire 67 - Somerset 0

Hampshire Women's squad represented 7 different clubs on the day, Cardiff Met University and Doncaster being two from out of the area.  11 tries were scored by 6 different players with Makeda Lewis of Portsmouth making her debut after 30 minutes and going on to score 4 very individual tries. Lucy Juffkins and Nina Hoadley, both from Ellingham & Ringwood scored two tries apiece whilst other scorers on the day were Hannah Kemish and Rachel Merrien, both from Trojans and Keeta Rowlands, currently with Doncaster but now living back in Hampshire. Emi Sutton of Cardiff Metropolitan University kicked two conversions and Caroline Cole Portsmouth converted four times.

The day was a wonderful example of what open, enjoyable rugby could and should be. Spirited broken play and open-field running rugby produced tries. Confident and aggressive defence kept out a redoubtable Somerset team who had bolstered their own squad with a number of players from Bristol Ladies. And at the final whistle, a group of ladies who had met and come together only 3 weeks previously became a team.

For the record we would like to thank Fordingbridge RFC for hosting us and putting on a great welcome. It was estimated that there were 50 - 60 people on the sidelines, many from Fordingbridge who came to support good rugby - THANK YOU.
