U18 Match Report

Middlesex U18 13 - 18 Hampshire U18

Hampshire's first game of the season was played at Farnham RUFC in good conditions. Hampshire had the best of the early exchanges but silly mistakes prevented them taking any advantage.

After 15 minutes Middlesex finally got out of their own half and took full advantage of a messy scrum to go over for the first try. Hampshire came back and quickly won a penalty in a kickable position. Unfortunately the kick was missed but Middlesex failed to clear their lines and conceded another penalty in front of the posts which was converted by Simon Johnson.

Hampshire struggled in the line out all game and Middlesex soon pounced on a Hampshire throw in their half. After a couple of phases in mid field Middlesex went over for a second try. The half was finished off with a converted penalty to Middlesex making it 13 – 3 at the break.

The second half started with a strong attack from Middlesex but Hampshire defence managed to turn the ball over and ship it out wide to James Wise who ran in a try from 80 metres breaking several tackles on the way.

This gave Hampshire more confidence and they started to push on. 10 minutes later a powerful run from Simon Johnson saw him go over for another try. Middlesex then came back hard and after several phases forced the ball over in the corner but determined defence prevented the ball being grounded.

Hampshire forced their way back down field and after prolonged pressure James Wise forced himself over in the corner for his second try. The game finished with both sides working hard to prevent any further scoring opportunities.

Overall there was plenty for the coaches to work on but as a first outing for a new group of players there was lots of positives to take away.
