Season  2017 -18

Building on the success of last season Hampshire RFU and the England Rugby Community team will once again run a series of ‘Friday Night Under Lights’.

The evenings are coordinated to help our clubs and provide social rugby to:

  • Re engage those players that are not able to commit to regular training and Saturday Rugby
  • Support our clubs trying to grow a new team (Millbrook 3rdXV, Locksheath Puma’s & Eastleigh 4th XV are a few examples)
  • Provide opportunity for Dad’s and lad’s / friends to play together  (Example Tottonians RFC)
  • Provide rugby for those teams that have had opposition cry off earlier in the week (Romsey RFC 2nd XV are an example from last year)

2017-18 Program:  To try and engage more teams throughout the county and cut down travel time we have engaged more venues but also front loaded the fixture to help our clubs recruit and retain players at the start of the season.  (We will hold more events post xmas to be advertised).

Frequency: There is not a necessity for teams to travel to every ‘Friday Night Under Lights’ but we hope that the options available will provide you and your players along with some cluster of clubs to play at regular intervals and suite your requirement.   It is also hoped that the venues will make participation more accessible for more clubs to be involved.

Format for the Evening:  The relaxed format of the evening allows for the rules to be adapted to the ability and fitness of the players.  E.g. Contested or Uncontested scrums, Contested or Uncontested lineouts; etc. these rules are decided between both teams before the start of each game.  This ensures that the games continue to be played in a competitive but friendly manner which caters for all ages and abilities of the players.

Whoever turns up is guaranteed game time, the evening caters for squads of any number. (Clubs have joined forces on previous evenings especially when fatigue sets in with a few players)!

As with previous events the games will be refereed by the England rugby development team;

 A qualified first aider / physio will be in attendance. If budget allows refreshments will also be made available

If you would like to participate in any of the events please contact either myself ivantorpey@rfu.com or Pierre Clarke PierreClark@RFU.com  (as indicated above).

Entries to be received no later than Friday 1st September.
