The 2017/18 rugby season is just a few days away from its start but the Premiership 7s last weekend in Northampton whetted the appetite for exciting campaign ahead.

But followers of Hampshire rugby were certainly keeping tabs on a number of former representatives of the county who were gracing the Franklin’s Gardens turf for the eighth edition of this curtain raising tournament.

And there was even sighting of one of the county’s up and coming talented referees on show!

Former Jersey youngster Will Kaye got himself on the scoresheet for Leicester Tigers, while Basingstoke’s starlet Isaac Curtis-Harris turned out and performed admirably for London Irish.

A third in Bath Rugby’s Joe Atkinson, who grew up playing his rugby for Petersfield, completed the triumvirate of players who had all played for Hampshire Schools or through the age groups.

And, with whistle in hand, Hampshire RURS’s rising star Adam Leal kept the players in check with an impressive performance in the middle.

Under 18 Robbie Keast award winner Cameron McDonald’s brother, Michael, was another with Hampshire connections to play in the tournament, turning out for Saracens.

The tournament, shown live on BT Sport over the weekend, allowed younger members of the Premiership teams’ squad to showcase their talents and Hampshire were very proud to see them all perform on such a big stage.

We will be keeping a close eye on their progress this season and hoping that many more follow in their path.
